Bombing raid in north-west province kills tens of civilians, council leader says
A US-led bombing raid has killed as many as 30 civilians in the north-western province of Badghis, the provincial council says.
Council leader Dawlat Mohammad Osamani said US warplanes bombed the Ghormach district after fierce fighting erupted between American soldiers, the Afghan army and the Taliban late on Wednesday. Many of the dead were women and children, Osamani said.
But District Chief Abdullah told the Reuters news agency that seven civilians and 15 insurgents were killed in the raid.
The news comes the day after US-led warplanes allegedly bombed a wedding party in the southern province of Kandahar, killings as many as 50 civilians.
The US military said it was investigating the incident, but said it would apologise if civilians had been killed in the raid.
